The government has pledged that by 2029 the NHS in England will once again be hitting its key cancer targets.
Only a handful of NHS hospitals met all three key targets in the 12 months up to November 2025.
- diagnose or rule out cancer in 75% of cases within 28 days of urgent referral
- begin treatment in 96% of cases within another 31 days
- ensure the whole journey takes no longer than 62 days in 85% of cases
The last one, the 62-day wait for treatment to start, has not been met for more than a decade.
