BMKG Kertajati Investigates Loud Boom and Fireball in Cirebon Sky

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CIREBON, — The Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) of Kertajati Station is collecting data related to reports of loud bangs and the sighting of a fireball suspected of meteors in Cirebon region, West Java, on Sunday night.

Head of the Forecast, Data, and Information Working Team of BMKG Kertajati, Muhammad Syifaul Fuad, stated that it was still collecting preliminary data on this phenomenon. According to Fuad, the sound of a bang from a meteorological point of view can be caused by various factors, such as lightning strikes, earthquake activity, or landslides.

Fuad explained that the weather in Cirebon at the time of the incident was reported to be sunny to cloudy. “Usually the sound of explosions or vibrations can arise from convective clouds due to lightning strikes. However, based on satellite imagery, there is no indication of convective clouds around Cirebon at the time of the incident,” he said.

To date, BMKG has not recorded any extreme weather activity or significant meteorological phenomena in the region. Fuad also said that the monitoring results have not shown any significant vibration activity in Cirebon. 

Phenomena related to meteors are the authority of space agencies. Fuad mentioned that the BMKG does not have special instruments to detect the motion of meteors or celestial bodies. “The phenomenon of meteors or space objects is the authority of agencies such as BRIN,” he said.

BMKG continues to monitor the development of information from various sources, including community reports, to ascertain the phenomena occurring in Cirebon. Based on the data collected, the phenomenon occurred around 19:00pm in several districts in eastern Cirebon, especially in Lemahabang area. A number of residents reported seeing the fireball pass quickly before dissipating in the distance, as well as hearing a loud bang.
