REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Criminologist from the University of Indonesia, Adrianus Meliala, responded to a case of alleged rape that hit an online taxi passenger while traveling from Depok to Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Soetta). According to him, sexual violence can basically be committed by anyone when biological urges cannot be controlled.
“When factors related to biological appetites such as hunger, pooping, and sex, cannot be regulated by the ego and superego, then people have sex like animals. Anytime, anywhere. Rape on the highway is like that,” Adrianus said when contacted by Republika.co.id, Thursday (27/11/2025).
Adrianus said that detecting “obscene drivers” or potential sexual harassment in online transport services is actually quite difficult. He explained that passengers, especially women, are often in a vulnerable position because they are in a confined space and do not have enough time to recognize the driver's character.
Nevertheless, there are observable signs such as changes in the attitude or behavior of the driver. In addition to that non-conforming vehicle number flats can also be a sign to watch out for.
“It's really hard to detect it. Passengers, particularly women, may only become aware if the driver begins to direct his or her speech or behavior. But even that is not always visible from the beginning,” Adrianus said.
Adrianus said online taxi companies should be more proactive in prevention, both through training and close supervision of drivers. Because according to him, cases of sexual violence like this will ultimately damage the reputation of companies and the level of trust of the public in their services.
“You have to remember that online taxis are service companies. The image is very important. The image is formed by trusts. If trust doesn't exist, who wants to use an online taxi service?,” exclaimed Adrianus.
For information, NG (30 years old) raped an online taxi driver with the initials FG (49 years old) while traveling from Depok to Soekano-Hatta airport. The rape took place on the road of Kunciran Cengkareng Toll Road around 3:30pm.
The perpetrator reportedly threatened the victim with an object suspected to be a firearm, then raped the victim in the passenger seat. After carrying out his violent action, FG then left the victim in an alley in Depok area
