Rory McIlroy held his nerve at the third playoff hole to win the Irish Open at the K Club in County Kildare at the expense Joakim Lagergren.

Both birdied the first and second playoff holes at the par-five 18th and although McIlroy's tee shot at the third found the rough, Lagergren's second from the fairway found water to suffer a one-shot penalty.

The Holywood man two-putted a third birdie with Lagergren unable to chip in as the Holywood man won his first tournament since completing a career Grand Slam at the Masters in April - also in a playoff - and first Irish Open title since his K Club win in 2016.

Earlier, McIlroy had sunk a 25-foot putt on the 18th to claim the eagle he needed to join Lagergren on 66 for the day and 17-under par for the tournament, forcing the playoff.

The Swede appeared to have broken for home when finding an eagle on 16 and then settled for a birdie at the 18th before McIlroy's heroics to the delight of the hoe crowd.

The pair went into the day on 11-under, four shots overnight leader Adrien Saddier who faded on final day with a two-over par 74.

It was a dramatic final day with Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello - who made a hole in one at the third - finishing two shots behind the leaders, alongside compatriot Angel Hidalgo.

Cabrera-Bello had an eagle putt on 18 to make it a three-way tie, but missed from deep and was also unable to sink the birdie opportunity.
