The penultimate day of action in Glasgow features a twist in the tale of the track as the mile returns for the first time since 1966, replacing the middle-distance blue-riband 1500m. Expectations are high in the men’s race as the Scottish duo of Jake Wightman and Josh Kerr vie for glory. Kerr has just lowered the world record for the event and said after his midweek heat: “How many times in my career am I going to be running to the line in front of a world-class pack feeling as good as I am in front of a home crowd?” Elsewhere, the boxing concludes today, with 14 gold medals up for grabs, plus action in track cycling. The netball competition reaches the semi-final stage. England, who beat South Africa in a comeback thriller on Thursday, will face New Zealand at 9am. In the later semi, Australia – four-time Commonwealth Games winners and reigning champions – meet Jamaica. John Ashdown, Billy Munday and Rob Smyth will keep the updates flowing. Goodwood has certainly lived up to its glorious billing this past week and the final day of the high-summer meeting on the rolling South Downs has plenty of interest for racing’s cognoscenti. Consent can gain the upper hand once again during her continuing tussle with Santorini Star in the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (3pm). Sir Mark Prescott’s star filly returns to the distance of her Prix de Royallieu victory at Longchamp in October. In the preceding contest over a mile and a half, William Haggas’s Al Aasy is seeking a third successive Glorious Stakes victory (2.25pm). There could be another successful title defence with Richard Spencer’s Two Tribes in the Stewards’ Cup (3.35pm). The Phil Cunningham-owned five-year-old is treading the same path as last year which yielded glory in the International Handicap at Ascot, too, where this year he came second. Pauline Ferrand-Prévot begins the Tour de France Femmes determined to repeat last year’s triumph, but the Frenchwoman faces a tough challenge in a field headed by her in-form Dutch rival Demi Vollering. Ferrand-Prévot, the Olympic mountain bike champion, returned to road racing two years ago with the Tour as her primary target, and rewarded that decision by becoming the first home winner of the race since 1989. She has carefully tailored her schedule to repeat the feat, finishing second at the Tour of Flanders and third at Paris-Roubaix before stepping away from competition after the Vuelta Femenina in May, where she finished 35th overall. Her Team Visma-Lease a Bike squad has been built around another bid for yellow and includes the triple stage winner Marianne Vos. However, Vollering is viewed as the pre-race favourite. The Dutchwoman has enjoyed a stellar season, winning the Giro d’Italia as well as several marquee one-day races, and arrives with perhaps the strongest form in the women’s peloton. The final day of the 2026 Games sees 15 gold medals on offer and features the contest for netball gold, plus a compelling day of action at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. In the women’s event, Great Britain’s Olympic medal-winning trio of Katy Marchant, Sophie Capewell (both England) and Emma Finucane (Wales) go head-to-head in the keirin. But the one to beat is New Zealand’s reigning Olympic and Commonwealth champion, Ellesse Andrews. The sprinter has been the dominant force over recent years, and became world champion in the event in 2023 in Glasgow. England’s Kadeena Cox has a strong chance of success in the Women’s C4-C5 4,000m individual pursuit, her signature event, which she won gold medals in at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. In the bowling, Scotland’s Paul Foster and Alex Marshall are targeting a repeat of the pairs gold they claimed on home grass at Glasgow 2014. The nine-stage route features nearly 19,000m of climbing, an individual time trial in Dijon and a potentially decisive summit finish on Mont Ventoux. It is the first time the legendary climb features in the women’s race. If that doesn’t decide the battle for the yellow, it could come down to the demanding final stage around Nice. Among those in contention are the Swiss rider Marlen Reusser, the Vuelta winner, Paula Blasi, and the former Tour champion Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney, while the veterans Elisa Longo Borghini and Anna van der Breggen cannot be ruled out. Sunday’s second stage from Aigle via the Vaudois vineyards ends with back-to-back ascents before the finale: a bunch sprint on Quai du Mont-Blanc. Alex Reid saddles up for our liveblog.
